- There are three main types of limestone: Carboniferous, Jurassic and Cretaceous.
- Carboniferous limestone is over 300 million years old, it is tough and the least porous type, it occurs in thick layers and often features in cave systems.
- Jurassic limestone is 135 to 208 million years old, is softer and more porous than carboniferous and is often used for building material.
- Cretaceous limestone, or chalk, is 66 to 144 million years old, is soft, porous and pure and forms the iconic White Cliffs of Dover.
