- The hypothalamus signals the beginning of puberty by producing gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GRH).
- GRH triggers the pituitary gland to release follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinising hormone (LH).
- LH and FSH stimulate the reproductive glands to produce oestrogen in girls, and testosterone in boys.
- The effects of hormones released in puberty can be seen in growth spurts, the growth of pubic hair and the beginning of periods in girls.
