A machine that is capable of performing complex tasks on its own, often under computer control. Robots are increasingly important in space exploration, as they can work in places we simply cannot send humans. They can make observations and return data to Earth, acquire and analyse samples, and even – as with the Mars Exploration Rovers – make simple decisions when they're out of contact with mission control.
