Though often used more narrowly to refer to ionising radiation, the term radiation refers to any form of energy that travels through a medium, radiating outwards from a source.

All matter emits a small amount of electromagnetic radiation as a result of its own thermal energy, usually in the infrared or microwave bands. Very hot objects can glow at visible wavelengths.
