Diploid cells have two sets of chromosomes, one from the male parent and one from the female parent. With the exception of the sex cells, all cells in the human body are diploid and so contain 23 pairs of chromosomes. Some other organisms, such as some plant and insect species, may have more than two sets of chromosomes as standard.
