Objects composed of rocky or metallic materials, mainly found orbiting the Sun in a region called the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. They vary in size, with the largest spanning hundreds of kilometres and sometimes called minor planets or planetoids. There are millions of small asteroids. It's thought that asteroids are material left over from the time that the planets formed.
