Very strong chemical bonds between oppositely charged ions. Ionic bonding typically occurs when metal and non-metal atoms exchange electrons, to complete their outer shells of electrons. This results in positive metal ions and negative non-metal ions, which are attracted to each other. It is this electrostatic attraction that is the ionic bond.
